Trail Mix “Decision Tree”

The first thing you need to know about trail mix is there are no real rules around trail mix. Basically it’s a mix of salted nuts, dried fruit and seeds…and M&M’s, yogurt or chocolate chips.

Despite there being no rules around trail mix there is a few basic guidelines most people tend to follow. Two parts nuts plus one part seeds plus one part fruit. 2:1:1. Easy! To make it even easier I’ve made up a little “decision tree” for you to use.

1. In a large cast iron fry pan over med-low heat, melt 1 tbsp of coconut oil. When oil has melted add 1/2 cup each of any two nuts. Be sure to make sure all the nuts are covered in oil.

2. Once nuts are coated add 1/4 cup each of any two seeds. Stir to coat. Add 1 tsp sea salt and thoroughly mix together. At this point you can also add any other flavor you like. I often add 1 Tbsp of Devils Dust if I want the trail mix to have a bit of a kick or 1 Tbsp of coconut sugar if I want it a bit sweeter. NOTE: add 1 tbsp of either garlic powder, onion powder, curry powder, ground cumin or even my Breakfast Blend Spice Mix as alternatives. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

Picture23. Once nut and seed mixture has cooled, add 1/4 each cup of any two dried fruits.

Picture44. Mix everything together and store each serving in a zip-lock snack bag. This would be where you add 1 cup of M&M’s, chocolate chips etc..NOTE: a serving is about 1/3 cup.
