The first thing you need to know about trail mix is there are no real rules around trail mix. Basically it’s a mix of salted nuts, dried fruit and seeds…and M&M’s, yogurt or chocolate chips.
Despite there being no rules around trail mix there is a few basic guidelines most people tend to follow. Two parts nuts plus one part seeds plus one part fruit. 2:1:1. Easy! To make it even easier I’ve made up a little “decision tree” for you to use.
1. In a large cast iron fry pan over med-low heat, melt 1 tbsp of coconut oil. When oil has melted add 1/2 cup each of any two nuts. Be sure to make sure all the nuts are covered in oil.
2. Once nuts are coated add 1/4 cup each of any two seeds. Stir to coat. Add 1 tsp sea salt and thoroughly mix together. At this point you can also add any other flavor you like. I often add 1 Tbsp of Devils Dust if I want the trail mix to have a bit of a kick or 1 Tbsp of coconut sugar if I want it a bit sweeter. NOTE: add 1 tbsp of either garlic powder, onion powder, curry powder, ground cumin or even my Breakfast Blend Spice Mix as alternatives. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
